Jamie Sawatzky, a social studies teacher at Rocky Run Middle School,  was named Virginia State "History Teacher of the Year" in 2006; and, more recently, he was named the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) 2012 Teacher of the Year for Virginia's Region 4.
[Sawatzky is one of the eight Regional Teachers of the Year finalists for the Virginia State Teacher of the Year in the VDOE/CCSSO's national competition.]
Sawatzky, who teaches seventh grade history and is the social studies department chair at Rocky Run,is perhaps best known for a project he began in 2004, now known as the "Melvin H. Rosen Oral History Center" at Rocky Run.  In that project,  he conducts digital interviews and preserves photographs of the community.
Sawatzky is equally involved in sharing history with his students outside the classroom. He organizes flights of World War II veterans arriving at local airports to visit the World War II memorial, and leads students and their families on tours during the spring break. Sawatzky also established and supervises the Shifting Gears camp, a summer orientation camp for rising seventh grades from elementary schools into his middle school.
