Historical Hall of Fame: Kathryn J. Blomquist is a teacher of grades 2-5 at Sunrise Valley Elementary School in the Fairfax County Public Schools system
Kathryn J. Blomquist earned a BA degree from Lake Forest College in Sociology and Anthropology in 2002 and an MS degree in Elementary Education from George Washington University in 2004. She has taught elementary school in FCPS from 2004-2013 where she implemented a school-wide writing initiative, led professional development on Writing Workshops, and initiated and managed production of student writing anthologies at every grade level. Ms. Blomquist taught in extended-day and extended-year programs and managed several community service projects (e.g., School Butterfly Garden, Fairfax Co. Sherriff’s Office Blankets for Children Drive)
For the Virginia Department of Education, she helped to align the 2008 History and Social Science Enhanced Scope and Sequence with the revised Curriculum Framework, created new lesson plans to support new content. and updated sample lesson plans, sample assessments, activities, and websites.
For FCPS, she wrote and revised multiple-choice questions for the eCART common assessment database, integrated social studies and language arts using the LEARN model for lesson planning, developed review materials for the Virginia Standards of Learning and helped align Fairfax County Program of Studies with state social studies standards. As a leader among elementary social studies teachers, she co-planned and presented “Increasing Rigor through Primary Sources” for the Virginia Department of Education SOL Academy, reviewed content from Teacher Created Materials, provided feedback as a member of their Teacher Advisory Board, and chaired the Social Studies Textbook Adoption K-3 Sub-Committee.
Ms. Blomquist has participated in a number of institutes and seminars on social studies and Virginia State History (e.g., The Smithsonian’s Teach-It-Forward Institute, the Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar - “The Founding Era” at Montpelier, and the Jamestown Settlement & Yorktown Victory Center Summer Teacher Institute.)

In 2012, Kathryn J. Blomquist was chosen as the Virginia State Council for Social Studies “Teacher of the Year"; and in 2013, she became Virginia's Lehrman-Glider State History "Teacher of the Year"
